Home // A Site of Exploration
Vartanian, Delaney
From the interior architecture to the furnishings and objects that inhabit it, a lived space plays an intimate role in the unfolding of daily life. Without pause or question, consistent interaction between body and space lends itself to pattern and routine. Domesticity hovers as a romantic ideal rooted in history, disparate from the present situation. When nostalgia for a domestic ideal abates, one may interact with and acknowledge a lived space anew. This body of work explores and questions normative ideas of the home and their translation into the material environment. A lived environment as a site of investigation can be a reimagined space.

Explorations in the Gray Morality of Conservation
Whitlock, Avery
I am interested in the areas of gray morality associated with conservation science. This science focuses on the protection of biological diversity primarily through the protection of species and their environments, and the management of human impact upon these.
This interest was sparked by personal explorations in scientific illustration and the field of conservation. The scientific observations and dynamic illustrations of John James Audubon led to my focus specifically on birds.
Similarly vital in realizing this interest were initial studies of motion I created through animation. Animated studies of motion, as fabrications of life, evolved into an interest of how we study living things.
For education, we capture, kill, and display. Opportunities for education come at a cost. For conservation, we remove, relocate, reintroduce, and remodel. Conservation science can be successful in the preservation of biological diversity, but we cannot forget the costs of our successes and failures.
In my art, I hope to bring the gray morality of conservation science to light.
Earlier works of animation embodied methods of conservation through artistic processes. Animation captures life through the display of the dead. In essence, animation is a rapid display of still images. These images, drawn from life, capture and still the motion of an organism, in a sense killing it. This “dead” creature is later displayed as the animation, an imitation of something alive.
My recent work is concerned with presenting specific stories in the study and conservation of animals. The results of current and past stories are presented physically and literally, making them impossible to ignore. Previous pieces were metaphorical in nature and were often overlooked. There is something about physically witnessing a representation of a creature that gives it more life, makes it more real.
I want to bring forth stories that many people are unaware of, to show that there are costs to our knowledge. Gray morality is prominent within the scientific fields. I want to present this morality as alarming, but neither right nor wrong. Without taking either side on these issues, I want others to form their own opinions on the costs of success in studying and conserving the natural world.

Foundations of Youth: Maturation as Design
Jackson, Jennifer
Foundations of Youth: Maturation as Design is an investigation of the process of human development, viewing it through a broad, creative lens.
In my work, I provide a metaphorical container for participants to fill with experiences and insight. My role is to interpret and respond to the data and information I gather, giving space for a population’s voice, producing opportunities for engaging participation. I see my work as striving to be sincere, to discover what we can learn from sitting here together, listening to each other’s experiences. My work is inspired by continuously being asked, “Are you an artist or a designer?” and “Are you a child or an adult?” This assumed dichotomy is an old way of thinking about the capabilities of designers and age groups. My work, however, is not about the “either/or.” It is about recognizing transitions and in-between spaces in design and in life. These hybrid spaces of creativity and profundity are inspired by questioning dreams, reflecting on the mundane, and sharing stories.
Design advances towards complete development, much like the brain, but never achieves a static state. In the expanding branch of design known as social design, the design process can be modeled as a frequently revisited loop, where researching, testing, making, and sharing are loose interpretations of the formal design process. This allows for moments of unexpected imagination, growth, and non-linearity. By viewing stages of development through this lens, maturation becomes a design challenge, something that is refined through experience.
I study the way we interact with objects, places, and memories using experiences of age as metaphorical steps in the design process. Creative inquiry begins as a hypothesis, which undergoes tests and analyses—meaning will be extracted. I collect and discuss my findings by developing empathy through design.
I work with three age groups that reflect my own experience of maturation: children, college students, and those beyond the normative Connecticut College student age. Each group contributes to a different creative work that corresponds to a specific design research method. These design research methods are ways of synthesizing parts of the design process to further develop the work. My work is always in the process of becoming something more than I originally intentioned. The message and form depends on who interacts with my work and the histories they carry with them.

Being Kind to Future Lives, Acknowledging This Life
Li, Donglin
In this written document, I aim to present my thought process in the context of my Buddhist practices and my changing attitudes towards them. By doing so, I hope to come to terms of the tragedies of the world that seem more pressing than ever. This document is divided into three parts: Where I Come from, Part I: Being Kind to Future Lives, and Part II: Acknowledging this Life.
