Recognizing Environmental Justice in History: Resistance and Agency in the Cross Bronx Expressway and the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike

Cross Bronx Expressway
Memphis Sanitation Workers' Strike
Civil Rights Movement

The term environmental justice did not become a part of academic discourse until the 1970s; however, the facts of environmental injustice predate the concept. Minority and low-income communities have historically born a disproportionate burden of the environmental harm associated with economic progress while reaping few of the benefits. The history of the building of the Cross Bronx Expressway from 1948 to 1972 and the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike of 1968 both involve what today can be labeled an environmental justice struggle in response to environmental injustices. Under the radar of the mainly white environmental movement, African Americans and others made strides to combat the harm to their communities and to the environment they encountered. Environmental injustice has been built into the laws of the federal government, and it has funded projects that perpetuate environmental injustice; therefore, the federal government of the United States has been a perpetrator of environmental injustice. Economic hardship, segregation, suburbanization, the construction of highways, urban renewal, and the desire to achieve growth at any coast have laid the groundwork for the environmental injustices of today. During the Memphis Sanitation Workers’ Strike, the civil rights struggle was seen as entirely separate from the mainstream environmental movement that was active during the same time; however, the two movements share common goals and could have benefitted from working together to achieve these goals. Transparency and community participation in government are essential to environmental justice. In order to achieve environmental justice, a city street needs to be seen as just as important to preserve as a mountaintop.

“Not One Looks like My Daughter!”: How American Girl Makes History Hegemony
LaConte, Nicole
Honors Paper

American Girl
hegemony
girls
socialization

American Girl markets dolls and books toward girls. Their original product line, which features historical characters, mobilizes history to teach moral lessons. This paper breaks down these morals to search for hegemony, a discourse that marginalizes minority readers. In this quest to uncover hegemony, the paper deals with issues of narrative perspective and socialization. Regarding narrative perspective, the paper asks, “Whom do these books deem normal in America? Whom do these books deem other in America?” Regarding socialization issues, this paper asks, “What value and behaviors do these books condone as part of acceptable American Girlhood? What values and behaviors are deemed totally aberrant and unacceptable?” In establishing normative perspectives and trajectories, the books raise issues about race, socioeconomic class, gender roles, religious identities, and nationalism. Given this particular line of questioning, this paper falls under the contemporary historical pursuit to problematize the very idea of historical accuracy, to uncover excluded voices from the traditional canon. The paper concludes that American Girl use history to perpetuate hegemony over young women in the United States.

Pan-Asian Imaginings: From Anti-Colonialism to Imperial Ambitions, 1905-1945

Winner of the 2017 Oakes Ames Prize.

Japan’s victory in the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, as a non-Western nation state that had defeated a Western imperial power, has been theorized as a global watershed moment, catalyzing anti-colonial nationalist sentiments across Asia and beyond. In the decades following this military success, Japan transformed into an imperialist nation state. Through engaging in colonial expansion across East and Southeast Asia, Japan supposedly shattered early idealistic illusions of Asian civilizational solidarity against Western imperial power. However, even as Japan engaged in imperialism in East Asia, for some anti-colonial nationalists and intellectual elites from the Indian subcontinent it paradoxically continued to embody Asian modernity and aspired ideals. Japan’s transformation into an imperial power elicited divergent perspectives among these nationalist elites based upon their ideologies and political philosophies. There was a spectrum of opinions and perceptions of Japan and its empire. Some nationalists who were opposed to British imperialism actively attempted to mobilize support for Indian independence in East Asia from the Japanese state and the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. Others actively disapproved of Japan’s imperialism and sought alternative alliances in East Asia in opposition.

Within the existing paradigms of area studies and historical scholarship, transnational connections between the histories of South Asia and East Asia have been studied only to a limited extent, and largely overlooked. This study attempts to interrogate transnational pan-Asianist imaginings among Indian nationalist leaders and the Bengali literati with reference to Japan’s empire in East Asia. What did Japan’s political and military successes symbolize for early twentieth century anti-colonial struggles? How did anti-colonial leaders respond to Japan’s imperialism? What do these responses reveal about the political philosophies and ideological divergences within anti-colonial movements? Through an in-depth analysis of available primary sources, this thesis has attempted to close the gap in the secondary literature about the historical relationships between South Asia and East Asia. In attempting a transnational intellectual history, this thesis opens up new possibilities for future research about pan-Asianism as a universalizing ideology within the globalizing world of the early twentieth century, and the relationships and interactions that shaped the development of modernity in the non-Western world.

Terrorist vs. Freedom Fighter: Uyghurs and the Colonial Legacy in Contemporary Xinjiang
Hale, Rachel
Restricted
2018-01-01T08:00:00Z

After former President George W. Bush declared the “war on terror” in 2001 its repercussions extended further than the Middle East into China’s northwest region of Xinjiang where the Uyghurs, a Muslim Chinese ethnic minority have lived for thousands of years. Uyghurs’ have long declared themselves ethnically separate from the Chinese people and therefore should remain politically and nationally independent from the Chinese nation. Conversely, the CCP’s contesting narrative shows the Uyghurs as always being a part of China, and therefore any independence movements are a threat to Chinese unity and national security.

The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) took advantage of “war on terror” rhetoric employed by the U.S. government to label Uyghurs as terrorists and Uyghur nationalism as terrorism. Efforts to quell separatist ideologies have led to widespread persecution and religious and ethnic discrimination; however, the CCP’s narrative shows their actions merely as counter-terrorism tactics. In an era when the fear of terrorism permeates society, is one man’s terrorist another man’s freedom fighter, or is the threat of terrorism too severe?

By delving deeper into Xinjiang’s contested past, particularly the colonial legacy of the Qing Empire, this study will argue that the ‘Xinjiang Problem’ (新疆问题) as it is often called in China, finds its roots further back than 2001, originating in the 18th century when Qing forces marched west towards Xinjiang and established their power in the region. The era of “new imperialism”, a concept describing the pursuit of territorial expansion by Western powers starting in the eighteenth century, brings a fresh understanding to colonialism as it was understood during that time. The relationship between Xinjiang and the ever-present Chinese entity was gradually shaped by the civilizing mission of Qing colonialism and further influenced by eastern forms of Orientalism that have lasted until today. This has caused Uyghur nationalism to further develop throughout the twentieth century and quickly intensify since 2001, allowing the CCP to label any unrest or discontent as “Islamic” unrest or discontent and therefore must be quelled as a part of the war on terror.

China's Expanding High-Speed Empire: An Assessment of the Belt and Road Initiative
Gummer, Megan

China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is an ambitious global investment and infrastructure building scheme projected to better international connectivity and trade relations. This study first provides an overview of the BRI fundamentals. In response to the debate surrounding the true nature of the BRI, this study then attempts to distinguish the main motivations behind the initiative as elucidated by U.S. critics as well as the Chinese government. To assess the imperialistic nature of the BRI, part two of the study historsizes a key BRI project, the Pan-Asian Railway, in the context of past imperial rail endeavors. It is argued that the BRI is not a case of imperialism because military facilitation, one of the two main components of railway imperialism, is very limited. Moreover, countries join the BRI on their own terms and have the flexibility to opt out before serious commitment is made to project construction. The BRI, ultimately, should be seen as a framework, created by China, but collaboratively governed by other countries and multilateral organizations. More advanced economies in particular should participate in the BRI to not only take advantage BRI investment opportunities but also serve as a kind of counterbalance to the potential threat of China’s rising global preeminence.
