Let us now measure the steps we have taken: The Connecticut College footprint is our next step to collectively creating a new path for others to follow. Conn has taught us diversity, academic freedom and scholarship, social consciousness, change, and willingness to take action. It is now up to us to make use of these tools. If we can appreciate diversity, we can reduce hatred and war. If we believe that decreasing our carbon footprints will make a difference, we can fight the environmental crisis. If we continue to research, discuss and appreciate the arts, we can innovate and redesign our world.

commencement 2009
Senior class president Nicholas Downing, of Pittsfield, Mass., graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in government.
We have been given the privilege of an unmatched education, and we now have the responsibility to use that education to leave the world a little better than it was when we arrived. Adlai Stevenson once quipped to a group of graduates, “When you leave here, don’t forget why you came.” As we move forward, let us make sure we do not forget, that we embrace the opportunities before us, and that we always strive to provide those same opportunities to the countless generations to follow.

92nd Commencement
Connecticut College
Riordan Frost
Riordan Frost offers advice and the quotes of others for his classmates to consider. He states he has argued for moral relativism in a classroom, but believes that there is goodness in the world, and that it cannot be suppressed. He advises his classmates to always give back to their community. The best cities are founded on a sense of civic responsibility, from ancient times to today.

Commencement Speech
Bobby Brooks '06 advises his classmates, ". . . whether we have our lives scheduled down to the minute, or no plans at all, none of can be sure what is going to happen next, and that is OK. I can be sure that that is OK because those who have come before us faced a much steeper uphill battle than we face today."

Kristin Griffin tells the soon-to-be-graduates, "We are so fortunate to have built up this kind of support for ourselves as we face something we can’t quite see, and those who make that possible — our friends, our professors, our families — should know today that they have made the difference in each of our lives."
