Abstract

The Peruvian writer Ventura García Calderón wanted to commemorate the 300 years of Cervantes’ death and the publishing of the Second Tome of Don Quixote congregating the French intelligentsia around this novel when the First World War ignited Germany invaded France. 59 writers, some already celebrated, and others still young, even fighting in the trenches, answered three questions Ventura posed to them (when did they read Don Quixote? What is its symbolism? and how is it that Don Quixote resembles a French knight?). The analysis of the answers reveals that all the writers knew Don Quixote, exalted his ideals and judged the war through Don Quixote’s perspective. We have examined the writer’s answers from a sociological approach, forming general types and looking for possible links between these and some social features of them.
