Abstract

In Dominican music, we can hear the history and the struggles that many faced throughout Dominican history. Very much like in the present day, the Dominican Republic has struggled with identity, economy, dictatorship and independence, and it has all been written down in music form. What is importance and history behind Dominican Palos, how it became such an important part of Dominican culture, and how it has influenced other genres of music, such as Dominican merengue and bachata. Why and how is this? How do Dominicans use music and dance to express themselves and the struggles they face? What are those struggles and how do they affect the socio-economic stance of thousands of Dominicans?
