Abstract
This essay reflects upon a summer of research with Columbia University's chemical engineering department. After a long process of getting the internship, research was conducted on the impact of various environmental conditions on the degradation of plastic to the nanoscale. The main plastics used were PET, which commonly is used in water bottles and PVC, which make up some of the pipes that carry water through our homes. Through this internship, I was able to explore life in a lab, and get hands on experience working with high-tech equipment and chemicals.
