Abstract

This reflection discusses my CISLA internship in Kyoto, Japan during the summer of 2024. My research focuses on labor migration to Japan, and I conducted fieldwork by working at a restaurant in a small hotel in Kyoto. Through this internship, I explored the experiences of migrant workers in the Japanese hospitality industry and gained firsthand insight into workplace dynamics, hierarchies, language use, and cultural adaptation. Although the internship was challenging, it greatly deepened my understanding of the difficulties faced by migrant workers in Japan's hospitality sector. The data collected through this fieldwork will inform my CISLA Senior Integrative Project.
