Abstract

This reflection paper describes my summer internship with Squash Urbano Colombia in Cartagena, a program that combines squash training with English education for children. Supported by funding from the Hale Center, I was able to live near the facility and take part in daily activities, beginning with early morning practices and continuing through afternoon coaching and English classes. The first days were challenging due to the intense heat and humidity, but I adapted and grew into my role as both a coach and teacher. Some of the most meaningful moments included one-on-one sessions with students and leading discussions during sexual education lessons with older kids, where I drew on my own past as a former participant in the same program. This experience strengthened my leadership, communication, and time management skills while also giving me a new perspective on how sports and education can empower communities. Ultimately, the internship was both personally rewarding and professionally formative, and it reinforced my interest in mentoring and working with youth in programs that create positive social impact.
