Abstract

Over the course of the Summer 2026, I worked at the University of Chicago Hospitals with the research group, The Hospitalist Project. As a Clinical Assistant Volunteer, I conducted 1-on-1 interviews with patients within the hospital concerning their health status and the quality of care they were receiving. Throughout this experience, I learned how to efficiently work in a healthcare setting with patients and research staff. Additionally, I became comfortable in knowing how to approach and speak with patients, to then ultimately assist them in completing their survey. Difficult moments did arise however when some patients would become frustrated with the extent of the interview questions, but maintaining respect and composure reduced any further negative feelings. Altogether, the exposure into the research side of medicine and navigation of patient interaction allows me to work exceptionally in a healthcare setting, while also continuing to seek opportunities in learning the medicine administration of healthcare physicians.
