Abstract

I completed an 8-week research internship at the University of Michigan Rogel Cancer Center, where I contributed to a larger project investigating the role of fibroblast-specific aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) signaling in pancreatic cancer. The project focused on understanding how fibroblasts, an important component of the pancreatic tumor microenvironment, may influence pancreatic cancer biology and progression. During my internship, I performed quantitative PCR (qPCR), Western blotting, and immunofluorescence to examine gene and protein expression and characterize cellular changes associated with AhR knockout. I also learned and performed the lab’s Opal multiplex immunofluorescence technique to visualize multiple cellular markers within tissue samples. In addition to my laboratory work, I had the opportunity to observe both human and mouse pancreatic dissections, gaining exposure to the connection between experimental cancer research and pancreatic tissue biology. This experience strengthened my skills in molecular and cellular biology techniques while giving me a deeper understanding of the tumor microenvironment and its potential role in pancreatic cancer development.
