Abstract
This reflection examines my summer 2026 internship as a wholesale property underwriting intern at Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance in Boston. It traces how I learned the way a submission moves from a wholesale broker to a quote and how underwriters evaluate property risk through construction, occupancy, protection, and exposure. My main projects included an Excel renewal tool that compares Statement of Value data across policy years, an analysis of claims against occupancy type, exhibits for leadership's annual In-Force Portfolio meeting, and a cross-department intern project on process improvement. The paper also considers how a liberal arts education supported this work, what I would do differently (particularly networking across business lines), and how the experience narrowed my career focus to property underwriting, with plans to build skills in Excel and catastrophe modeling.
