Abstract

This reflection paper discusses my experience completing a BIO121 Nutrition course through Portage Learning during the summer of 2026, funded by the Career Action Program at Connecticut College. As a prerequisite for nursing school not offered at Conn, the self-paced course strengthened my understanding of nutritional biology while directly informing my work as a resident assistant in a senior living facility's memory care unit. I explore how coursework on macronutrients, metabolism, and population-level health determinants translated into a real-world application. The experience also surfaced challenges in self-directed time management and reinforced my career trajectory toward becoming a nurse practitioner, while sharpening my specific interest in nutrition.
