Abstract

My internship at the Institute for Human Centered Design gave me valuable experience exploring architecture, accessibility, and disability advocacy. I surveyed buildings, researched accessibility renovations, participated in outreach events, and developed skills such as time management, critical thinking, and creativity. The experience helped me apply knowledge from my architecture and environmental studies classes while also teaching me new architectural concepts and skills. Although I sometimes felt underqualified and lacked supervision, the internship helped me become more interested in urban planning and public transportation and I will consider working before attending graduate school. Overall, the experience provided me with useful career connections and lessons about workplace responsibility, commuting, and the importance of planning ahead.
