Abstract

This summer I participated in the summer science research institute, which consisted of staying on campus for a month to conduct research and then studying abroad at Stellenbosch University in South Africa to learn more about intergenerational trauma and healing in order for me to better understand the data I collected on campus. The courses I took at Stellenbosch allowed me to understand my data through the lens of how historical trauma and mass trauma can impact people and communities mentally, physically, and spiritually. Overall I had a life-changing summer and I feel much more confident in my knowledge of mental health and trauma, as well as my ability to interview research participants about sensitive and deeply personal subject-matter.
