Abstract

This past summer, I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to work as a camp counselor at Camp Ramapo, a residential summer camp that caters to people with social, emotional, or learning challenges, specifically those who are on the autism spectrum. One of the most challenging aspects of this internship was learning how to manage my emotions and temper. Having only worked with neurotypical children before, I was in for a rather thrilling adventure. Many of the campers I had the opportunity to work with had difficulties with communication, exhibited repetitive behaviors, and struggled with sensory activities.
