Abstract

This reflection paper summarizes my summer experiences volunteering and observing in two distinct occupational therapy (OT) settings in San Diego, CA: an outpatient clinic for upper extremities with Spine & Sport Physical Therapy in National City, and a pediatric OT setting at HealthPRO Pediatrics in Rancho Bernardo. Through networking and leveraging connections, I secured observational roles at both clinics, which provided me with over 65 hours of exposure to different OT specializations. My primary objectives were to gain a comprehensive understanding of the field, refine my observational skills, and build professional connections. Despite the observational nature of my role, I was able to develop valuable insights into treatment planning, patient interaction, and the overall therapeutic process. The experiences enhanced my time management, organizational, leadership, and communication skills. I also learned the importance of adapting to new environments and assertively engaging with professionals. My academic background in psychology, sociology, and human development significantly informed my approach, enabling me to connect theoretical knowledge with practical experiences. Additionally, I identified personal strengths and areas for improvement, such as adapting to different work schedules and maintaining perseverance. This experience reinforced key ethical principles, including patient confidentiality and culturally sensitive care. Ultimately, these observations have shaped my career goals, inspiring me to pursue a doctorate in Occupational Therapy. The experiences solidified my passion for the field and provided a clear pathway toward enhancing my clinical skills and leadership abilities in patient advocacy.
