Abstract

In the summer of 2024, I participated in the Design Assembly program, a competitive community design and build initiative led by McLeod Architects in Middlebury, VT. This immersive 9-day project involved 10 students, two architects, and a builder, working together to design and construct a kayak storage shed for a rural New England community. Through a rigorous process starting with brainstorming and design refinement, followed by hands-on construction, I developed crucial skills in organization, collaboration, and time management. The experience, which began with overcoming site challenges and culminated in the successful completion of the project, provided me with a deeper understanding of architectural processes and project dynamics. It was a blend of practical learning, teamwork, and personal growth, offering valuable lessons and lasting memories.
