Abstract
Spending time at Staten Island Audiological, under two highly trained specialists, Mary Goodacre and Kate Spektor ended up being more than a typical internship, it was an eye opening experience in my desire to be involved in the healthcare field. As I have spent the past three years studying primarily Biology and Psychology I was eager to gain real hands on experience that I could connect my educational foundation to real life practices. What I found working there is that it is a community within itself between the relationships of the Audiologists to the workers to the patients. I was not only just observing practices, but I was also being encouraged to partake in these experiences. I was able to help with patient evaluations, diagnostic testing, and keeping track of patient records. Being involved in a private practice was extremely different in comparison to bigger hospital settings I have seen. Everything felt more personal and tailored to the patients, I saw financial, emotion, and physical challenges. This internship not only confirmed my desire to be in the medical field, but to eventually work in a private practice because of the personal individualistic care the patients receive.
