Abstract

A reflection on my experience during the Summer of 2026 SSRI program with Professor Jackson-Huaqui. Over this summer, we studied the allelopathic impacts of mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) on mature zinnia (Zinnia elegans). We ran an experiment that administered mugwort extract created from 3 different mugwort populations on mature zinnias plants to test allelopathic impact and phenotypic differences between populations around campus. Our findings revealed no significant effect of the mugwort extract on mature zinnias plants, but the lack of results could be due to a variety of other obstacles that presented themselves during the course of our experiment. Despite the lack of significant results, we believe our research can be built upon to learn more about the success of mugwort as an invasive plant.
