Abstract
This summer, I had the opportunity to return to Animal Medical Center in Trappe, PA, as a hands-on veterinary extern after previously shadowing there. This experience allowed me to develop clinical and professional skills through assisting with examinations, handling, blood draws, vaccinations, x-ray, surgical procedures, and patient care. I also strengthened my communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills while learning the importance of preparation, asking questions, and learning from observation and mistakes. Beyond clinical skills, I gained a deeper understanding of the ethical responsibilities of veterinary medicine, particularly when navigating euthanasia, quality of life, animal welfare, and supporting owners through difficult decisions. This experience furthered my desire to pursue veterinary school and a career as a veterinarian.
