Abstract

This reflection examines my Summer 2026 experience with the Archaeological Conservation Institute, where I worked directly with ancient mosaics while learning from professional conservators. Through fieldwork, lectures, and the creation of my own mosaic using traditional materials and techniques, I gained a better understanding of how archaeological conservation connects anthropology, art history, and material culture. I also developed skills in time management, collaboration, creativity, communication, and leadership through the program’s demanding schedule and a group documentary project about our work. The experience showed me that I enjoy physically active, hands-on work more than I expected and encouraged me to consider conservation as a future career. Overall, the program allowed me to apply my academic interests outside the classroom while gaining practical experience in archaeology and cultural heritage.
