Abstract

This reflection explores my experience as a Video Documentation/Archive Intern at the Bates Dance Festival and the ways the internship challenged me to grow as both a filmmaker and a collaborator. Entering the festival without a formal background in dance, I learned to approach cinematography through movement, emotion, rhythm, lighting, and performance rather than solely through traditional cinematic storytelling. Ultimately, my time at Bates Dance Festival broadened my understanding of filmmaking, strengthened my ability to collaborate across disciplines, and taught me the value of stepping outside my comfort zone to use film as a tool for preserving and communicating the energy of live performance.
