Abstract

This reflection examines my summer experience working with Dr. Ellen Flannery-Schroeder at the University of Rhode Island (URI) through Courage Quest, a camp designed to support children with anxiety disorders using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)-based activities. The experience allowed me to connect my studies in neuroscience and psychology with direct work involving children and mental health. Throughout the internship, I helped develop camp activities, worked collaboratively with other interns, and learned how to adapt research-based strategies to meet the individual needs of campers. The experience strengthened my communication, leadership, creativity, and problem-solving skills while also teaching me the importance of patience, observation, and flexibility when working with children. Courage Quest ultimately reinforced my interest in neuropsychology and my long-term goal of helping children with anxiety, learning differences, and other challenges better understand themselves and advocate for their needs.
