Abstract

This paper explores my experience as an Underwriting Intern at Westfield Specialty in Chicago during the summer of 2026. How an opportunity unexpectedly emerged after a persistent search and the guidance of upperclassmen mentors. I reflect on how my initial goals of understanding the insurance industry firsthand and adapting to a corporate setting played out. Learning about the job through real underwriting responsibilities, a collaborative AI liability project spanning multiple offices, and building new relationships with brokers at "marketing events". The reflection also considers how well my liberal arts background prepared me for this environment. I learned about my own strengths and weaknesses and several ethical lessons shaped my outlook moving forward. In the end, this internship became a defining point in my professional growth, sparking a genuine passion for insurance and a clear ambition toward future leadership in the field.
