Abstract

My name is Matthew Hernandez, a senior now at Connecticut College, and this summer I was fortunate to have the experience of working as a day camp director for Brains in Motion in New York City. In this position, I was responsible for 25-30 children and four other staff, while also communicating with parents, the corporate, and my regional supervisor. Throughout the summer, I faced challenges with camp materials, curriculum, staff concerns, and working with children who required different levels of support. Through these experiences, I learned a lot about the corporatization of child care, while also developing important skills in communication, leadership, patience, and problem-solving. Overall, this experience gave me a wholly new view on how best to lead, work as a group, and handle unexpected situations in a leadership position.
