Abstract
This reflection explores my internship as a Camp Counsellor at Steve & Kate’s Camp in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a full-day childcare programme operating from 8 am to 6 pm. My goals were to gain practical experience in non-traditional childcare settings and to observe how freedom and structure interact to support children’s social-emotional growth. Over the summer, I strengthened my adaptability, communication, and leadership skills while managing the challenges of working in a high-volume camp with upwards of 200 children per day. Although I successfully navigated large groups, the constant demands became overwhelming, leading me to recognise my preference for more structured environments. Overall, the experience deepened my interest in child development and people-centred work.
