Abstract
After my enjoyment of the first semester of organic chemistry confirmed that I wanted to pursue a career in chemistry, I decided I needed to gain some experience working in the lab. Therefore, I applied to and participated in the Summer Science Research Institute at Conn in the Ovaska lab, working on a total organic synthesis project of the compound Guanacastepene A. Throughout this experience, I not only learned many important lab techniques, but I also learned about my own workflow and how a research lab operates. This experience, in part funded by the Hale Center, provided me with the necessary hands-on experience needed to stand out to graduate schools.
