Abstract

The Brown University Health pediatric cardiology team at Hasbro Children's Hospital provided me with an opportunity to intern with them for the summer. The purpose of this internship was to gain hands-on clinical experience working with patients and getting comfortable with all aspects of cardiology. During the internship, I learned to listen to patients' hearts and identify types and severities of murmurs. I learned the basics of analyzing an EKG, the basic views of an echocardiogram, the circulation between fetal and adult hearts, the ins and outs of the stress lab, and about a variety of complex cases, gaining exposure to patient interactions and behind-the-scenes collaboration and analysis. I worked with several pediatric cardiologists, medical residents, and an adult cardiologist at various points throughout the summer. This opportunity allowed me to make valuable connections with professionals who can guide me throughout my career journey, and to present to the entire cardiology department on my experience as a patient of rare acute heart disease. These experiences solidified my intent to go to medical school and pursue internal medicine and pediatrics. The internship was incredibly fulfilling, furthering my interest in pediatric cardiology.
