Abstract

The article begins with a brief survey of previous criticism of the role of the Devil and "all his works" in the comedia in general. In the New World this presence is mainly apparent in his arch-deception, idolatry, which appears constantly as a topos in the corpus of American plays established by Zugasti. There follows a brief statistical analysis of the Devil's presence in the corpus with conclusions. The author emphasizes how fundamental diabolic presence and idolatry are in all the works where the Indians take the stage, contrasting this with the absence of the Devil when the Indies are merely an incidental location of the action. McGrath points to other aspects (bodily possession, physical aspects, cannibalism, etc.) which are worth studying in the future. In conclusión, the author tries to relate the necessity of demonizing the Other to concepts of mediation in art and the function of imperial power.
